America – Just Like Hollywood

I’ve arrived in America and from the minute I queue with the six million other people snaking our way to the Immigration Counter I am mesmerised!

It really is like in the movies, the sitcoms and the reality shows!

There in the queue in front of me is the Texan with his big hat and pointy boots! The Road Train Trucker Lady is there with her singlet and tatts and the Handsome College Boys are confident and tanned chatting with their Cheer Leader Girlfriends! Not to mention the All American middle class family!  I love it!

Finally getting my entry stamp some hours later I find the “Super Shuttle” kiosk and organise to be taken to my Hostel.  This is a brilliant and reasonably priced service using what could be described as a shared taxi service.  I hadn’t booked in advance, but I only had to wait less than twenty five minutes before my rather grumpy “Baloo” Character of a driver collected me!

I shared the shuttle with three other people, one being a friendly fellow Ozzie, now living in Houston with his American wife.

As we speed along the wide freeway I soak up my first sights and impressions of America.

They really do drive great big vehicles and square nosed trucks and their school buses really are “Forest Gump” Yellow!

Houston skyline is in the distance and as we speed towards it I think about Melbourne and realise that the entire scenery reminds me of Australia, except that I’m already becoming used to being called “Maam!”

I’m looking forward to America!
